Nonprofit Job Growth Exceeds Private Sector 3:1 Over Last Ten Years
Where are the jobs? In the nonprofit sector, it appears.
According to the US Department of Labor, nonprofit jobs have grown 17% since the 2007 recession, while business employment grew less than 5%.
The sector is huge. As the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies points out, nonprofits are the third largest employers. Only retail and manufacturing are bigger.
Why is this happening? Lester Salamon, Director of the Center, says it’s a reflection of the prevalence of nonprofits in education, health and social services in a growing service economy.
